TAKE THIS! [2023]
TAKE THIS! is a Photovoice exhibition addressing economic security and the prospects of guaranteed income. In support of storytelling efforts around our community’s guaranteed income pilot, YALift! (Young Adult Louisville Income for Transformation), this Photovoice exhibit lifts the voices and experiences of five young artists in our community.
We believe poverty is not a choice but an institutional failure perpetuated by a systematic lack of resources. Systemic disinvestment and social welfare distrust have had inequitable effects on under-resourced communities. We value the voices and livelihoods of our young adults. When our young adults succeed, we all succeed.
The decisions about how to secure financial equality are systemic and often made without the voices of those most directly affected by those decisions - individuals living in neighborhoods with concentrated poverty. To address this shortcoming, this project focuses on young adult community-based participatory action using Photovoice as a medium to understand why steps to achieve guaranteed financial income are necessary.
TAKE THIS! is a partnership project between the Hite Institute of Art & Design at the University of Louisville, Metro United Way, RPOP (Russell Place of Promise), and The Social Practice Lab.
